Social Media Safety Tips for Teens (and the Parents Navigating It With Them)
Telling a teenager to "be careful online" is the digital equivalent of telling them to "make good choices." The intent is right. The specificity is not there.
Practical social media safety for teens comes down to concrete platform settings, specific warning signs they can recognize themselves, and the kind of relationship with a parent where they actually bring problems forward rather than managing them alone in their bedroom.
Here is the version that is specific enough to act on.
Platform Settings That Actually Matter
Most parents and teenagers overlook the difference between default platform settings and what's actually configurable. These settings are worth reviewing on any platform your child uses:
Account privacy. Private accounts limit who can see posts and stories to approved followers. Public accounts broadcast content to anyone on the platform, including adults whose profiles may not reflect who they actually are. Private accounts represent significantly lower risk. For children under 16, private accounts should be the default, not the exception.
Direct messages from strangers. Most platforms allow you to restrict DMs to people a user follows back, or to disable them from non-followers entirely. This is one of the most impactful safety settings available and one of the least-used. Grooming typically begins through direct messages, often from accounts that appear to be age-appropriate.
Who can tag or mention them. Tagging can be used to expose a teenager's account to the follower networks of others, including people they don't know. Restricting who can tag a teen without approval limits this exposure.
Location permissions. Most apps request location access. Few need it to function. Disable location services for social media apps, and ensure that location data is not embedded in photo metadata that gets uploaded.
Story and post visibility. Many platforms allow granular control over who sees what. Some teenagers maintain a "main" account with controlled posts and a "finstas" or secondary account for closer friends. While the dual-account phenomenon is usually about social rather than safety reasons, it's worth knowing whether your child has accounts you don't know about — not as surveillance, but as context.
Warning Signs of Online Grooming
Research on how online grooming actually unfolds shows a consistent progression. The warning signs are not dramatic; they're subtle enough that many children don't recognize them as warning signs at all, and neither do parents watching from a distance.
Excessive secrecy about a specific relationship or conversation. A teenager who is generally open but becomes intensely private about one particular online contact is worth a gentle, non-accusatory conversation.
An "older friend" who seems unusually interested. Grooming perpetrators are disproportionately represented among adults who seek out relationships with teenagers and present themselves as exceptionally understanding, not like other adults, and interested in the teenager's problems in a way that feels caring. The flattery is calculated.
Receiving gifts, gift cards, or money from online contacts. Financial grooming — particularly in sextortion contexts — sometimes begins with small gifts to establish a relationship before escalating to pressure for images.
Adults asking children not to tell their parents. This is the clearest behavioral red flag. Children should be explicitly taught that any adult who asks them to keep a secret from their parents is exhibiting "tricky" behavior — regardless of the stated reason. Safe adults do not ask children to maintain secrets from their caregivers.
Conversations that started casually becoming sexual. Grooming escalation is gradual and deliberate. It often begins with age-appropriate topics before incrementally introducing sexual language or requests, each step normalized by the preceding steps. Children who know this pattern exists are significantly more likely to recognize it.
Pressure for photos. Any request for photos, particularly any request to undress or be "more comfortable," is a criminal offense and should be reported immediately. NCMEC's cybertip line (www.missingkids.org) accepts reports, as does the Internet Watch Foundation in the UK.
The Platforms Worth Knowing About
Different platforms have different risk profiles. A working understanding of the major platforms your child uses is not surveillance — it's the minimum necessary context for meaningful safety conversations.
TikTok: Default accounts are public. Algorithm-driven content discovery means users are frequently shown content from accounts they don't follow. DMs are available to users 16+. The short-form video format is highly engaging and algorithmically optimized for time-on-platform.
Instagram: The full spectrum from heavily curated public accounts to private close-friends stories. DMs from non-followers can be restricted. The platform has a significant grooming risk profile — it was named in the majority of online enticement cases in FBI reporting.
Snapchat: Messages disappear after viewing, which is a significant complication for documentation if harassment occurs. The "discover" feature surfaces content from publishers alongside peer content. Friend locations can be shared through Snap Map.
Discord: Primarily text and voice chat servers organized around topics or friend groups. It is heavily used in gaming communities. Public servers can expose children to adults with no connection to their real-world social circle. DMs between users are default-available.
BeReal: Sends a simultaneous front-and-back camera prompt at random daily times. The "authenticity" design means photos often capture location information. The social pressure to post in the moment can create inadvertent location disclosure.
Apps marketed as "safe for kids": Platforms explicitly positioned as age-appropriate for children (Messenger Kids, Roblox, YouTube Kids) have moderation systems, but none are fully protective. Roblox in particular has had documented cases of grooming within its platform.

Having the Conversation Without Making It an Interrogation
The most important safety feature is not a platform setting. It is whether a teenager feels they can tell a parent when something weird happens online without the conversation becoming about what they're doing wrong.
Children who fear the response will be device confiscation, parental escalation they can't control, or punishment for the circumstances of the incident will not disclose. They will manage the situation alone. Research on why children don't report online exploitation consistently surfaces these fears as the primary barriers.
The conversation that builds the disclosure relationship is not "I need to talk to you about online safety." It is the accumulated effect of a dozen low-stakes conversations where a parent engages with genuine curiosity rather than alarm — asking about what they're watching, who they're talking to, what the drama in their friend group is — and responding to disclosures without overreacting.
When a child tells you something uncomfortable about their online life and your first response is help rather than punishment, they come back with the next thing. That track record is the actual safety infrastructure.
For Younger Children: The Truly Kid-Friendly Options
Parents of children under 10-11 who are asking about age-appropriate social options have a short list worth considering:
Messenger Kids (by Meta): Requires parental approval for all contacts. Parents manage the contact list through a companion app. No ads. Filtered content. Reasonable choice for children who want to video call or message specific family members and approved friends.
Animal Crossing, Minecraft with known friends only: Gaming platforms with social features can function as low-risk social environments when played exclusively with known real-world friends in private settings.
The honest answer is that most social media platforms are not designed for children under 12, and none of them are risk-free. Delaying full social media access while maintaining age-appropriate social connection through gaming with known friends and supervised messaging is a defensible approach.
